The glass

Glass set to the spec, not to whatever is on the truck

Two storefronts that look identical from the sidewalk can have very different glass in them. What goes in yours depends on code, on which way the front faces, and on what the building is paying to cool.

• Tempered safety glass. Required in doors, in the fixed glass next to them and anywhere else code calls a safety glazing location. We order it tempered to your sizes and set it.
• Insulated units. Two lites with a sealed airspace. What most conditioned buildings want, and what fogs years later when the seal fails.
• Tinted and low-e. A west-facing front in July is a cooling bill. Tint and low-e coatings cut solar heat gain without going dark inside.
• Laminated glass. An interlayer that holds the lite together after a hit. Where security, sound or a repeat break-in location is the driver.
• Clear float. Where it is not a safety location and not conditioned space, plain annealed glass is the right call and the cheaper one.
• We measure, then order. Field measured off the opening, not off a drawing. A storefront lite that arrives a quarter inch wrong is a reorder, not a trim.

We cut and fabricate in our own shop on Fremont Street, so a small lite or a field change does not wait on a supplier run.

Repair or replace

Which one your front actually needs

• Usually a repair. One broken or fogged lite in sound framing. A leaking joint. Tired gaskets. A door that has sagged. None of that needs the system torn out.
• Usually a replacement. Framing that is bent, corroded or pulling out of its anchors. A system so old the parts are gone. A front that never met the spec for the use it now has.

We will tell you which one you are looking at before anything is ordered, and we will tell you when the cheaper answer is the right one.

How it runs

From the call to glass in the opening

• Send the opening. What broke or what you are building, rough sizes if you have them, and a photo. A photo of the framing tells us the system.
• We secure it if it is open. Board up first when the building is not secure. That happens the same day, at any hour.
• We field measure and quote. Glass, framing and labor as one number, with the real lead time on anything that has to be ordered.
• We set the glass. Installed, sealed and cleaned, with the opening left the way you would want a customer to see it.
