What Is a Walk-In Shower
A walk-in shower uses fixed glass panels instead of a door. You walk directly into the shower through an open entry , no swinging door, no sliding panels, no barrier. The glass contains the water spray within the shower area while maintaining an open, airy feel. Walk-in showers are the most sought-after bathroom feature in luxury home design, master bathroom remodels, aging-in-place renovations (no door threshold to navigate), and modern minimalist bathrooms.
Walk-In Glass Configurations
Single Fixed Panel
The simplest and most popular walk-in design , a single glass panel mounted perpendicular to the wall, creating a defined shower zone with an open entry on one side. The panel is typically 3/8″ or 1/2″ tempered glass, extending from the shower floor to near the ceiling. This design works for linear showers with a showerhead positioned to spray away from the open entry.
L-Shaped Return Panel
Two fixed glass panels meeting at a 90-degree angle , one panel along the wall and a shorter return panel creating a more enclosed space with a wider entry. This configuration provides better water containment than a single panel while maintaining the open walk-in feel.
Channel/U-Shape
Three panels forming a U-shape with an open entry at one end. This is the most enclosed walk-in design and provides the best water containment. Ideal for larger showers where you want a fully defined wet zone without a door.
Curbless Entry
The ultimate walk-in design combines doorless glass panels with a curbless (zero-threshold) shower floor. The floor is continuous from the bathroom into the shower with a slight slope toward the drain. This creates a completely barrier-free shower that is wheelchair accessible, aging-in-place friendly, and visually stunning. Note: curbless shower floors require specific construction during the bathroom build or remodel , the floor framing and waterproofing must be designed for a curbless installation.
Glass Options for Walk-In Showers
Thickness: Walk-in panels are typically 3/8″ or 1/2″ tempered glass. Since there are no hinges or moving parts, the glass simply needs to be thick enough to be structurally sound at the installed height. We recommend 1/2″ glass for panels taller than 72″ for maximum stability.
Glass types: Clear is the most popular , the whole point of a walk-in design is openness and visibility. Low-iron (ultra-clear) is the premium choice for the truest color representation. Frosted panels are available for those who want the walk-in layout with some visual privacy.
Hardware: Walk-in enclosures use minimal hardware , U-channel at the wall mount, support bars or clamps at the top, and sometimes a stabilizing bar from the glass to the opposite wall or ceiling. All hardware is available in chrome, brushed nickel, matte black, oil-rubbed bronze, and brass finishes.
Design Considerations
Water containment: Without a door, the showerhead placement and spray direction are critical. We assess your layout during the measurement visit and recommend panel placement and size to ensure water stays in the wet zone.
Ventilation: Walk-in showers generate steam that needs to escape. The open design inherently provides ventilation, but proper bathroom ventilation (exhaust fan) is still essential to prevent moisture issues.
Minimum size: Walk-in showers work best when the shower area is large enough that the open entry is not directly in the spray zone. Generally, showers 48″ or wider are good candidates for walk-in designs.
Frequently Asked Questions About Walk-In Shower Glass
What is a walk-in shower?
A walk-in shower uses fixed glass panels without a door. You walk directly in and out through an open entry, so there is nothing to open or close. The fixed panel keeps water contained without enclosing the space. It is the most open, modern shower configuration and one of the most popular master bathroom upgrades in Las Vegas.
Do walk-in showers without doors let water out?
A properly designed walk-in shower keeps water in the shower area. The key is the angle and size of the fixed glass panel, the placement of the showerhead, and the slope of the floor drain. We design the panel configuration to contain water for your specific shower layout.
What glass thickness is used for walk-in shower panels?
Walk-in shower fixed panels use 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch tempered glass. Because there is no frame supporting the panel, the glass needs to be thick enough to be structurally stable on its own. Most standard configurations use 3/8 inch. Larger or taller panels benefit from 1/2 inch.
What configurations are available for walk-in showers?
The most common configurations are a single straight panel, an L-shaped panel with a return, and a neo-angle layout with panels on two sides. The right configuration depends on where your showerhead is, how large the opening is, and how your bathroom is laid out. We design during the free in-home measurement visit.
How do you anchor a walk-in shower panel?
Fixed walk-in panels are anchored with a floor-mounted U-channel at the base and wall-mounted clamps or channels where the glass meets the wall. The hardware is drilled into studs or tile backer, not just tile, for a solid mount.
How much does a walk-in shower glass panel cost?
A single fixed walk-in shower panel in Las Vegas typically runs between $600 and $1,200 depending on the size, glass thickness, and hardware finish. L-shaped or multi-panel configurations run higher. Call (702) 382-1400 for a free in-home estimate.
